Challenge Rating A monster's challenge rating tells you how great a threat the monster is. An appropriately equipped and well-rested party of four adventurers should be able to defeat a monster that has a challenge rating equal to its level without suffering any deaths.
Proficiency Bonus A monster's proficiency score is a reflection of their general skill level in and out of combat. It is directly tied to their challenge rating. If this field is left blank, it will automatically be filled by the appropriate value for the selected CR.
Armor Class A monster that wears armor or carries a shield has an Armor Class (AC) that takes its armor, shield, and Dexterity into account. Otherwise, a monster's AC is based on its Dexterity modifier and natural armor, if any. If a monster has natural armor, wears armor, or carries a shield, this is noted in parentheses after its AC value.
Hit Points A monster's hit points are presented as both a die expression and as an average number. A monster's size determines the hit dice used to calculate its hit points.
Attack Bonus Monster attack rolls use a d20 and add their proficiency bonus and the appropriate ability modifier. These can be spell attacks or weapon attacks. If a monster has varying attack bonuses, use the highest.
Damage/Round Take the average damage a monster deals with each of its attacks in a round and add them together. If it has different attack options, use its most effective attacks. If its damage output varies from round to round, calculate its damage each round for the first three rounds of combat, and take the average. Include any off-turn damage-dealing features, such as reactions, legendary actions, or lair actions.
Save DC A monster might have an attack or some other trait that requires a target to make a saving throw. The DC might be an arbitrary value appropriate for its challenge rating or it might be the product of the following formula: 8 + the monster's proficiency bonus + the monster's relevant ability modifier.
